Mozart: Facts You May Not Know

1. He was never called “Amadeus” during his lifetime.

Mozart was baptized as Johannes Chrysostomus Wolfgangus Theophilus Mozart. “Theophilus” comes from Greek and means “beloved by God.” The composer preferred the French form Amadé. The name Amadeus became common only after his death.

2. At 14, he transcribed a forbidden masterpiece from memory.

While in the Vatican, Mozart heard Allegri’s Miserere — a secret work whose score was forbidden to be copied. After hearing it once, he wrote it down entirely from memory. Instead of punishment, the Pope rewarded him for his extraordinary talent.
